The ugly duckling (miracle weed)....
We would like to call this the ugly duckling of the flower world. Not because it IS ugly, but because its treated as such.
When we were designing our Home serum for kidneys, liver and gut inflammation we wanted to pick ingredients that were incredibly effective and easy for most to find.
In our search for the ingredients that would have the biggest impact on your vital detox organs, what came up again and again was the dandelion flower. You've probably seen it everywhere but it does not get the attention it deserves with regards to what it can do for your body.
T araxacum officinale is the most common variety of this plant, and it grows in many parts of the world. Despite it being considered a weed, every part of dandelion, from its golden flowers to its jagged leaves and sturdy roots, are packed with nutritional and medicinal values.
Dandelions are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, iron, and potassium. These nutrients contribute to the overall well-being of the body, supporting various bodily functions and promoting good health.
Rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are beneficial for us because they neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals. Our body produces free radicals naturally, but if the levels of free radical get too high they may contribute to developing a chronic disease.
Dandelions contain high levels of beta-carotene, an antioxidant which helps protect cells from damage. Studies show that carotenoids such as beta-carotene, play a crucial role in reducing cell damage.
Additionally, dandelions are also rich in another antioxidant named polyphenol, found mostly in the flower of dandelion but it also occurs in stem, roots and leaves.
Packed with nutrition
From the flower to root, dandelions are highly nutritious plants packed with minerals, fiber and vitamins.
The green of the plant can be eaten cooked or raw and is an excellent source of vitamins A,C and K. They also contain folate, vitamin E and a small amount of other B vitamins.
The greens of dandelion contain several minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium.
The roots of dandelion are rich in carbohydrate inulin, a variant of soluble fiber found in plants that supports the growth and maintenance of healthy gut bacteria.
May reduce cholesterol levels
Dandelions contain bioactive compounds that may reduce cholesterol levels, which are key risk factors for heart disease .
Some of the polyphenols in dandelion, such as flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, may have cholesterol and triglyceride-lowering properties.
It is possible that people can use dandelions to help treat high cholesterol, but more research is still needed.
Supports healthy digestion and treat constipation
Dandelions are often used in traditional medicine to help treat constipation and other digestive issues.
The roots of the plants are a rich source of the prebiotic fiber inulin, which has been shown to reduce constipation and promote the movement of food through the digestive system.
Whether you choose to consume it as a tea or add it to your food, dandelion may offer a natural and gentle solution to digestive discomfort, making it a potential ally for those seeking digestive wellness.
Immune Health
Some research indicates that dandelions may have antimicrobial and antiviral properties, which may support our body’s ability to fight infection.
Studies also suggest that certain active compounds found in dandelions play a protective role against harmful bacteria and fungi.
