Gotu kola or Centella asiatica is a plant traditionally used in Chinese and Indonesian medicine. This plant is indigenous to the wetlands of Southeast Asia, where it’s consumed as a juice, tea, or supplement. We chose this unique ingredient to go into our Feel Serum.
This serum was specifically designed to provide true relief to the mind and body. Here is how and why we incorporated Gotu Kola.
Practitioners of alternative medicine use Gotu Kola for its anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as to promote overall mental health.
Some traditional uses of Gotu Kola include:
- healing wounds
- relieving diarrhea
- boosting energy levels
- reducing anxiety
- enhancing sexual potency
- treating venereal diseases
- treating skin diseases
- treating menstrual disorders
- slowing Hansen’s disease (leprosy) progression
- prolonging life
- Liver conditions
Boost cognitive functions
In a small study on 2016 it was compared the influence of gotu kola extract and folic acid on cognitive function in the aftermath of a stroke. The participants, divided into three groups, each experienced a unique dosage regimen — one group consumed 1,000 milligrams (mg) of gotu kola daily, another took 750 mg of gotu kola daily, and the third opted for a daily dose of 3 mg of folic acid.
The study revealed that both gotu kola and folic acid helped improve overall cognition function. However, when it came to the memory domain, gotu kola was more effective in improving it.
Helps healing stretch marks, scars and cellulite
The presence of cellulite, scars, and stretch marks on our skin can have a toll on our mental health. Gotu kola could be a helpful friend in dealing with them! This plant stimulates new collagen and improves blood flow. Together, these things work to get rid of cellulite, those fat cells deposits under the skin.
According to studies, phytochemicals such as saponins in gotu kola can help prevent the formation of wound scars by regulating collagen production.
Another study in 2015, showed that gotu kola extracts reduced the appearance of abdominal stretch marks in about 15 subjects who were treated over a period of 6 to 12 weeks.
Helps reduce Anxiety
Certain studies suggest that gotu kola might possess a calming or anti-anxiety impact. In a 2016 study, scientists observed a reduction in anxiety-related behaviors in sleep-deprived mice after administering gotu kola. Although this research is in its early stages, it hints at the potential of gotu kola in alleviating stress and anxiety.
Another human-focused study revealed that gotu kola could diminish the startle response, often linked to anxiety. However, it's crucial to note that additional evidence is required to firmly establish the connection between gotu kola and its potential role in managing anxiety.
Treats Skin Infections
Gotu kola showcases its ability to fight skin infections through its antibacterial and antiviral properties. Specifically, the asiatic acid found in gotu kola demonstrates effectiveness against various bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
Treating Varicose Veins
Believed to be a key player in enhancing blood circulation, Gotu kola is thought to fortify the walls of blood vessels, thanks to its rich triterpenoids content. These compounds are considered to be crucial in promoting collagen production, contributing to the improved tensile strength of blood vessel walls. The intriguing theory suggests that by maintaining the elasticity and integrity of veins, Gotu kola might play a role in alleviating the appearance of varicose veins.
Tights and firms Skin
When used topically Gotu Kola is known to provide remarkable firming and anti-wrinkle benefits to the skin. It is loaded with triternene saponins and also a great source of phytonutrients called flavonoids that act like antioxidants and helps fight off free radical damage. It boosts the formation of collagen and skin tissue, which is crucial in maintaining the skin’s elasticity and youthful glow.
